Portugal is a place where Romans, Visigoths, Moors, Spanish had settled down before it became a kingdom in the 12th Century. Portugal is therefore full of vestiges that witness the conflicts of peoples and the melting of cultures.

This study tour will concentrate on the cultural and religious perspectives of Portugal in the Middle Ages. Visits will include sites of interests in economic, academic, military and religious aspects.

In less than two weeks we intend to visit fishing ports with bars for sailors and grocery shops, cellars where port is made from wine and the first slave market in Europe; three medieval universities; castles and fortresses built by Romans, Visigoths, Moors and the Order of the Knight Templar; Roman temple ruins; Cathedrals and Churches in Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque style built from the sites of mosques and synagogues; monasteries, cloisters and convents; chapel of bones; tombs of crusaders and necropolis for nobles.

Attendance to three afternoon lectures is required:
